Golf in Ierland

Weinig golfbestemmingen spreken zo tot de verbeelding als Ierland, een eiland waar de sport lijkt te zijn vergroeid met het landschap zelf. De kustlijn van golvende duinen, het zachtgroene binnenland en het steeds wisselende Atlantische licht geven elke ronde iets dramatisch, en het land geldt terecht als een van de geestelijke bakermatten van het linksgolf. Met ruim tweehonderd banen verspreid over het eiland is een reizende golfer nooit ver van een gedenkwaardige afslag, of die nu hoog boven zee ligt of beschut tussen glooiend parklandschap.

De golf valt uiteen in een handvol duidelijk verschillende regio's, elk met een eigen karakter. Noord-Ierland telt de meeste banen en heeft een wild, winderig gevoel, terwijl Dublin en het Oosten mooie golf koppelen aan goede bereikbaarheid en stadsleven. In het zuidwesten wordt het decor spectaculair, met de kliftop van Old Head Golf Links en gastvrije clubs als Kinsale Golf Club en Douglas Golf Club, terwijl het westen van Ierland beloont wie het verst durft te reizen langs zijn ruige Atlantische rand. Het klimaat is mild en groen het hele jaar door, waarbij de late lente tot de vroege herfst de langste en helderste speeldagen biedt. Voor afwisseling, hartelijkheid en pure natuurpracht blijft Ierland moeilijk te overtreffen.
