Campos de golf en Surrey y Londres

Surrey y el cinturón verde en torno a Londres forman una de las mayores concentraciones de golf de interior del mundo, con unos 120 campos agrupados en el campo al sur y al oeste de la capital. Es la cuna del gran heathland inglés: suelo arenoso y de buen drenaje cubierto de brezo, aulaga y abedul plateado, que produce un césped rápido y firme buena parte del año. Las calles bordeadas de pinos y los búnkeres recortados sobre el brezo púrpura dan a la región un aspecto inconfundible, y la cercanía de Londres sitúa un golf de primer nivel a poca distancia en coche.

Para el golfista viajero, el atractivo está en la variedad y la calidad reunidas en un territorio reducido. Es posible encadenar varias vueltas muy distintas sin cambiar de base, desde exigentes clubes de socios hasta trazados de parque más relajados sobre la arcilla, cerca del Támesis. Los campos de heathland alcanzan su plenitud a finales de primavera, cuando florece la aulaga, y de nuevo en otoño, cuando el brezo y el abedul cambian de color, mientras que el terreno arenoso mantiene jugable el golf invernal. Con buenas conexiones de tren, clubes clásicos y siglos de tradición, Surrey y Londres son una de las regiones más gratificantes de Inglaterra para un viaje de golf.
