Golf in Hungary

Hungary is a quietly appealing golf destination, best enjoyed as part of a broader trip to one of central Europe's most characterful countries. The setting is gentle and inland: open plains, soft hills, river valleys and the warm light of the Pannonian basin give the courses a relaxed, spacious feel far removed from crowded coastal resorts. Golf here is still a relatively young and intimate pursuit, which is much of its charm. The handful of courses worth seeking out gather in and around Budapest, so the elegant Hungarian capital, with its thermal baths, grand architecture and lively dining, makes a natural and very enjoyable base.

The season runs from spring to autumn, with warm, settled summers and pleasant, golden conditions in May and September that are ideal for unhurried rounds. The courses themselves offer welcome variety, from parkland-style layouts to more open countryside settings, among them Pannonia Golf and Country Club, the Magyar Golf Club at Kisoroszi and the Budapest Highland Golf Club. Green fees and everyday costs remain very reasonable by Western European standards, tee times are easy to come by, and the welcome is warm and unfussy. For a travelling golfer who likes to combine a few relaxed rounds with food, culture and city life, Hungary is a rewarding and refreshingly uncrowded choice.
