Muirfield

Muirfield, East Lothian, Scotland

Muirfield is the home of the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, the world's oldest golf club, and one of the most respected links courses on the Open Championship rota. Laid out on the flattest ground in Gullane, it compensates through masterful routing: an outer loop runs clockwise, an inner loop anti-clockwise, meaning the wind never blows from the same direction for more than three consecutive holes. The greens are fast and fiercely contoured, and the rough is notoriously punishing. Past Open Champions who have triumphed here include Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Tom Watson, Nick Faldo, Ernie Els, and Phil Mickelson, placing it firmly among the game's most hallowed arenas.
